ABOUT THE BOOK
Straits Chinese Silver: A Collector's Guide is the definitive authority on the unique silverware produced for the Peranakan (Straits Chinese) community of Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Written by Ho Wing Meng, a pioneer in the study of Southeast Asian material culture, this book is part of his acclaimed Straits Chinese Heritage series.
The book serves as both a historical record and a practical handbook for collectors, documenting an art form that flourished from the mid-19th century until the early 20th century but has since become a rare and highly sought-after antique category.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Ho Wing Meng was a professor of philosophy at the National University of Singapore (NUS), but he is best remembered as the man who "discovered" Peranakan material culture for the modern world.
At a time when these items were being melted down for their silver content or ignored as "hybrid" curiosities, Ho Wing Meng recognized them as a distinct and sophisticated art form.
His series of books (on Silver, Porcelain, Furniture, and Beads) helped ignite a "Peranakan Renaissance" in the 1970s and 80s.
