ABOUT THE BOOK

Dr. M. V. Krishna Rao's Studies in Kautilya is an objective and through examination of Kautilya's Arthasastrafrom the standpoint of his own age and society. Kautilya and Aristotle are found to have many identical views, which are opposed to Machiavelli's. Kautilya abhorred petty principalities and advocated a strong empire based on righteousness. The emergence of the Mauryan emprire, which comprises practically the whole of the Indian sub-continent, attests to the genius of Kautilya as a political theorist and practical statesman. Strict economy of expression, adherence to discussion and judicious selection of topics are the factors which bring into bold relief the various interesting aspects of the Arthasastra in a book of this small size.

Studies in Kautilya is a scholarly examination of Kautilya’s Arthashastra, exploring it in the context of its time—ancient India—and comparing its political-theoretical ideas with thinkers such as Aristotle. The author argues that Kautilya opposed petty principalities and supported the idea of a strong, moral empire rooted in righteousness. The book pays attention to Kautilya’s ideas on law, diplomacy, war, administration, social structure, and the roles of different strata including women in Arthashastra society. Despite its relatively modest length, it is detailed and precise—discursive yet focused on key themes.  It delves into both Kautilya’s theoretical genius and his practical statesmanship, trying to present a balanced view that avoids common misinterpretations.
