ABOUT THE BOOK
The Adi Granth: Or The Holy Scriptures of the Sikhs, published in 1877, is the first-ever partial translation of the Guru Granth Sahib into English. Commissioned by the British government in India and executed by the German missionary and philologist Dr. Ernest Trumpp, it remains one of the most controversial works in the history of Sikh studies.
While the book is an impressive feat of oriental scholarship and linguistics, it is heavily criticized for its dismissive tone toward Sikh philosophy and its lack of sensitivity toward the sacred nature of the text.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dr. Ernest Trumpp (1828–1885) was a brilliant German linguist and professor of Oriental Languages at the University of Munich. He was an expert in Sindhi and Pashto. However, as a missionary of the 19th century, he approached the Adi Granth as a dead linguistic artifact rather than a living spiritual guide. His strained relationship with the Sikh Gyanis (scholars) in Amritsar, who found his habits disrespectful, deeply colored the commentary provided in this volume.
