ABOUT THE BOOK

The Ain-i-Akbari (literally "The Institutes of Akbar") is a monumental 16th-century detailed document recording the administration of the Mughal Empire under Emperor Akbar. Written in Persian by his court historian and confidant, Abu'l-Fazl 'Allami, it serves as the third volume of the much larger historical work, the Akbarnama.

While the first two volumes of the Akbarnama deal with Akbar’s ancestors and his reign, the Ain-i-Akbari is unique because it is a gazetteer and administrative manual. It provides a "snapshot" of the empire's statistics, revenue systems, army, and cultural diversity, making it one of the most important primary sources for Indian history.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Abu'l-Fazl 'Allami was the grand vizier and court historian of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, as well as one of his "Nine Jewels" (Navaratnas). A brilliant polymath and master of the ornate Persian Insha style of writing, he was the primary architect of Akbar’s liberal religious policy known as Sulh-i-kul (Universal Peace). His scholarship was marked by a commitment to rationalism and a departure from the traditional, purely religious chronicles of his era. His immense influence and close bond with Akbar eventually led to his tragic assassination in 1602 by an agent of Prince Salim (Jahangir).
