ABOUT THE BOOK

The Avacchedakatānirukti: With the Subodhā Commentary, edited and elucidated by the legendary modern scholar Prof. N.S. Ramanuja Tatacharya (with contributions from S. Lakshminarasimham) and published by the Institut Français de Pondichéry (French Institute of Pondicherry), is an extraordinary, highly specialized milestone in classical Indology and Indian epistemology. This critical text operates within the formidable domain of Navya-Nyāya (New Logic), a philosophical system celebrated for its ultra-rigorous, highly formalized linguistic and logical framework developed in medieval and early modern India.

The primary objective of this text is to define and unpack one of the most notoriously complex and foundational concepts in Indian logic: Avacchedakatva (the nature of a "limitor" or the property of being a determinant characteristic). The book targets a specific, elite layer of scholastic textual succession:

  • The Root Text (Tattva-Cintāmaṇi): Originally written by Gangeśa Upādhyāya in the 14th century, establishing the Navya-Nyāya school.
  • The Secondary Commentary (Dīdhiti): A revolutionary mid-15th-century critique written by the brilliant, iconoclastic logician Raghunātha Śiromaṇi.
  • The Super-Commentary (Gādādhari / Avacchedakatānirukti): A highly technical supplement written by the master logician Gadādhara Bhaṭṭācārya (c. 1604–1709) to expand upon Raghunātha's definitions.

The specific portion contained in this volume focuses on Vyāpti—the concept of invariable, universal concomitance (the logical relationship between a signifier, like smoke, and the signified, like fire). Gadādhara analyzes how a property limits or isolates another property to ensure absolute logical certainty, avoiding errors of over-extension (ativyāpti) or under-extension (avyāpti).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Gadādhara Bhaṭṭācārya (17th Century) was the undisputed titan of the Navadvipa (Bengal) school of Navya-Nyāya. Known historically as the last great peak of neo-logical philosophy, he authored extensive treatises that established the highest standards of logical precision in the Indian tradition.

Prof. N.S. Ramanuja Tatacharya (1928–2018) was a towering, internationally revered Sanskrit scholar, logician, and grammarian. He served as the Vice-Chancellor of the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha in Tirupati and was deeply integrated with the French Institute of Pondicherry. Recognized for his rare ability to master traditional, highly technical Shastric commentary while maintaining modern academic clarity, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan (one of India's highest civilian honors) and the prestigious Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government for his monumental contributions to preserving classical heritage.
