PREFACE

25th December 2017, marks the beginning of the one hundredth year of the founding of The Yoga Institute in 1918 by Shri Yogendra. On this occasion, we are happy to come out with this biography of his son and disciple, Dr. Jayadeva, and his wife Hansaji.

The self-effacing person that he is, Dr. Jayadeva showed no interest in the idea of a book on him. Only after we assured him that this will be a book on the work of The Yoga Institute in the last one hundred years, he relented and gave his consent. Thus, in this book we get a glimpse of the personality of Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra and Hansaji through their untiring work to help thousands of sadhakas find their bearings and discover the inner joy. Hence, this is very much the story of the sadhakas too.

At the turn of the century, we are at a crossroads; we have to decide what we want from Yoga. The life the Yogendras depicted in this work serves as a pointer to what Yoga is all about.

I thank Shri Subba Rao, former Associate Editor of Amar Chitra Katha publications, for working on this biography with dedication. Many of the disciples of the Yogendras have participated in the making of this book. I thank them all.
