ABOUT THE BOOK

The Holy Qur'an: English Translation, Commentary and Notes by Abdullah Yusuf Ali is arguably the most widely read and influential English translation of the Quran in history. First published in the 1930s, it was a pioneering effort to present the Islamic scripture in a high-literary English style that mirrored the grandeur of the original Arabic.

What sets this edition apart is not just the translation, but the extensive commentary and footnotes. Yusuf Ali provided thousands of notes that draw upon history, philosophy, science, and comparative religion to explain the context of the verses. He also included unique "poetic running commentaries" at the beginning of each section, which summarize the spiritual essence of the chapters. This edition features the full Arabic text alongside the English, making it a complete resource for both study and recitation. It remains a staple in libraries and homes globally, celebrated for its lyrical beauty and its bridge-building approach to explaining Islam to the English-speaking world.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Abdullah Yusuf Ali (1872–1953) was a British-Indian Islamic scholar, lawyer, and civil servant. Born in Surat, India, he was a man of immense erudition who was equally comfortable with Western classical literature and Islamic theology. He was a graduate of the University of Cambridge and served as the principal of Islamia College in Lahore.

Yusuf Ali’s life was marked by a deep desire to foster understanding between the East and the West. His translation was a labor of love that took years to complete, driven by his belief that the Quran’s message of universal humanity needed to be communicated in a language that the modern world could appreciate. Despite personal hardships and a nomadic life between India and Europe, his scholarly legacy remains unparalleled, with his translation serving as the primary introduction to the Quran for millions of people worldwide.
