ABOUT THE BOOK
The Origin of Brahmi Script is a seminal academic compilation edited by S.P. Gupta and K.S. Ramachandran. Published in 1979, the book addresses one of the most significant "missing links" in Indian history: the origins of the script used by Emperor Ashoka to propagate his Dhamma.
The book is unique because it is structured as a scholarly debate. It presents two "Key Papers" by prominent historians—S.R. Goyal and K.V. Soundara Rajan—followed by critical comments and rebuttals from a panel of the world's leading epigraphists and archaeologists. It tackles the "gaping hiatus" of nearly 1,000 years between the disappearance of the Indus script and the sudden, sophisticated appearance of Brahmi in the 3rd century BCE.
