ABOUT THE BOOK
The Quiet Mind is a classic spiritual travelogue that follows the journey of John E. Coleman, a former CIA agent and businessman, as he traverses Asia in search of mental peace. Frustrated by the stresses of modern life, Coleman explores various disciplines—from the teachings of J. Krishnamurti in India to Zen in Japan—before finally discovering the practice of Vipassana meditation. The book is particularly famous for documenting his time with the great Burmese master Sayagyi U Ba Khin, under whose guidance Coleman experienced profound clarity. It serves as both an engaging adventure story and a sincere introduction to the "art of living" through meditation.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
John E. Coleman (1930–2012) was an atypical spiritual seeker whose background included service in the British Intelligence and the CIA during the 1950s. After his transformative experiences in the East, he became a prominent meditation teacher, dedicated to spreading the technique of Vipassana in the West. He was one of the few Westerners authorized by U Ba Khin to teach, alongside other notable figures like S.N. Goenka. Coleman’s approach was pragmatic and grounded, reflecting his own transition from a high-stakes professional life to one of inner stillness. He spent his later years teaching in Europe and the Americas, influencing thousands of practitioners.
