ABOUT THE BOOK
The Sikandar Nāma, e Bara (The Book of Alexander the Great) is the final masterpiece of the Khamsa (Quintet) by the legendary Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi. Written around 1200 AD, this prose translation (originally by H. Wilberforce Clarke in 1881) brings Nizami’s epic poem into the English language, offering a unique "Eastern" perspective on the life and exploits of Alexander the Great.
In Persian literature, Alexander is not just a Greek conqueror; he is transformed into Iskandar, a Persian prince, a world-traveling philosopher, and a prophetic figure.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: NIZAMI GANJAVI (1141–1209)
Nizami is considered the greatest romantic epic poet in Persian literature. The Bridge Builder: He combined the heroic tradition of the Shahnameh with the mystical depth of Sufism. The Master of Realism: Unlike his predecessors, Nizami added psychological depth to his characters, making them feel like real humans with complex emotions. Legacy: His "Khamsa" influenced almost every major Persian, Turkish, and Urdu poet for centuries, including Amir Khusrow and Navai.
