ABOUT THE BOOK

Towards Understanding Islam (originally titled Risala-e-Diniyat) is one of the most widely read introductory books on Islamic theology and practice in the modern era. Written with remarkable clarity, Syed Abul Ala Maudoodi intended this work as a comprehensive "primer" for those seeking to understand the inner logic and spirit of Islam. The book systematically covers the fundamental articles of faith (Iman), the significance of prayer (Salah), fasting, charity, and the concept of Jihad (in its broadest sense of struggle for truth). Rather than focusing solely on rituals, Maudoodi emphasizes Islam as a complete "Way of Life" (Din), explaining how a believer's submission to the Creator influences their individual character and social conduct.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Syed Abul Ala Maudoodi (1903–1979) was a towering 20th-century Islamic scholar, philosopher, and political thinker. He was the founder of the Jamaat-e-Islami, one of the largest Islamic movements in South Asia. A prolific writer, his most famous work is Tafheem-ul-Quran, a contemporary commentary on the Quran. Maudoodi’s thought was instrumental in reviving the idea that Islam is not merely a set of private beliefs but a comprehensive socio-political system. His works have been translated into dozens of languages, and he remains a deeply influential, though often debated, figure in the history of modern Islamic thought.
