ABOUT THE BOOK

Upadesa Saram (The Essence of Instruction), originally composed in Tamil as Upadesa Undiyar, is considered one of the most important philosophical texts of the 20th century. While Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi wrote very little, this 30-verse poem contains the entire map of spiritual practice, from basic rituals to the highest state of Self-Realization.

The version involving B.V. Narasimha Swami (the author of the first major biography of the Sage, Self-Realization) is highly prized for its clear, line-by-line English commentary and its ability to bridge the gap between ancient Vedic thought and modern inquiry.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879–1950)

Known as the "Sage of Arunachala," Ramana Maharshi is one of the most revered spiritual masters of modern India. Unlike many scholars, his teaching was born not from books, but from a profound "Death Experience" he had at the age of 16.

The Experience: While a schoolboy in Madurai, he was seized by a sudden, violent fear of death. Instead of panicking, he lay still and inquired: "Now that the body is dead, am I dead? Is the body 'I'?" He realized that the "I" is a deathless Spirit, independent of the body.

The Teaching Style: He rarely gave long lectures. His primary medium was Silence (Mauna), which he claimed was the loudest form of instruction. When he did speak, he pointed everyone toward a single question: "Who am I?" (Atma-Vichara).

Literary Contribution: He wrote very little. Upadesa Saram (The Essence of Instruction) is one of his few written works, composed in four languages (Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, and Malayalam) to ensure the "essence" of the Vedas was accessible to all.

B.V. Narasimha Swami (1874–1956)

B.V. Narasimha Swami was the man responsible for "discovering" Ramana Maharshi for the English-speaking world. Before becoming a devotee, he was a highly successful lawyer and a member of the Madras Legislative Council.

A Life of Tragedy and Search: After the tragic death of his children, he abandoned his lucrative legal career and political status to find spiritual peace. He traveled across India, visiting many saints, but found his "Home" at the feet of Ramana Maharshi in 1929.

The Biographer: He authored the first major biography of the Sage, titled Self-Realization. This book was a landmark because it used a "lawyerly" approach—interviewing eyewitnesses and documenting facts—to prove the Maharshi's spiritual state.

The Bridge: Because he was fluent in English, Sanskrit, and Tamil, he was uniquely qualified to translate Upadesa Saram. He took the Maharshi's terse, cryptic verses and expanded them into logical, philosophical English commentaries that appealed to the "modern, skeptical mind."

Later Life: He is also famously known as the "Apostle of Shirdi Sai Baba," as he later spent years spreading the teachings of Sai Baba across India.
