ABOUT THE BOOK
Why I Assassinated Mahatma Gandhi (often published as May It Please Your Honour) is the transcript of the final statement made by Nathuram Vinayak Godse before the Punjab High Court on May 5, 1949. In this statement, Godse explains his motivations, political philosophy, and the specific reasons that led him to assassinate Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on January 30, 1948.
The book is a primary source document for understanding the ideological rift within the Indian independence movement. Godse used his trial as a platform to argue that his actions were not motivated by personal malice but by what he perceived as a patriotic duty to protect the interests of Hindus and the integrity of India.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Nathuram Godse (1910–1949) was a right-wing activist from Maharashtra. He was a member of the Hindu Mahasabha and a former member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He edited a Marathi daily called Agrani (later Hindu Rashtra). Godse was a staunch proponent of Hindutva and believed in the concept of Akhand Bharat (Undivided India). He was executed by hanging at Ambala Jail on November 15, 1949.
